Ihadneverkilledalivingthingbeforeingtothewoods,butwewerehunter-gatherers,andwithoutanoccasionalbitofproteini,allofuswouldsuffer.Wetooksquirrels,moles,mice,fish,andbirds,althoughtheeggsthemselvesweretoogreatahassletostealfromthe.Anythingbigger—suchasadeaddeer—wedsge.Idonotcareforthingsthathavebeendeadalongtime.Inlatesummerandearlyfall,inparticular,thetribewoulddiogetheronanunfortunatecreatureroastedonaspit.Nothisarabbituarrynight.But,asSpeckwouldsay,everyidyllsuccumbstodesire.
