Justbeforethebookscame,Mr.GilmanhadbeguntoremonstratewithMissSullivanonthegroundthatIwaswtoohard,andinspiteofmyearprotestations,hereducedthenumberofmyrecitations.AtthebeginningwehadagreedthatIshould,ifnecessary,takefiveyearstoprepareforcollege,butattheendofthefirstyearthesucyexaminationsshowedMissSullivan,MissHarbaugh(Mr.Gilmaeacher),aher,thatIcouldwithouttoomucheffortpletemypreparationintwoyearsmore.Mr.Gilmanatfirstagreedtothis;butwhenmytaskshadbeesomeerplexing,heinsistedthatIwasoverworked,andthatIshouldremainathisschoolthreeyearslonger.Ididnotlikehisplan,forIwishedtoentercollegewithmyclass.
OnthesevehofNovemberIwasnotverywell,anddidnotgotoschool.AlthoughMissSullivahatmyindispositionwasnotserious,yetMr.Gilman,onhearingofit,declaredthatIwasbreakingdownandmadegesinmystudieswhichwouldhavereimpossibleformetotakemyfinalexaminationswithmyclass.IhedifferenceofopinioweenMr.GilmanandMissSullivaedinmymotherswithdrawingmysisterMildredandmefromtheCambridgeschool.
