WhenIwasalittlegirl,IvisitedWellesleyandsurprisedmyfriendsbytheannou,"SomedayIshallgotocollege--butIshallgotoHarvard!"WhenaskedwhyIwouldnotgotoWellesley,Irepliedthattherewereonlygirlsthere.Thethoughtofgoingtocollegetookrootiandbecameaneardesire,whichimpelledmetoeopetitireewithseeingandhearinggirls,inthefaceofthestrongoppositionofmanytrueandwisefriends.WheNewYorktheideahadbeeafixedpurpose;anditwasdecidedthatIshouldgotoCambridge.ThiswastheapproachIcouldgettoHarvardandtothefulfillmentofmychildishdeclaration.
AttheCambridgeSchooltheplanwastohaveMissSullivaheclasseswithmeandinterprettometheinstrugiven.
Ofcoursemyinstructorshadhadnoexperieeaganybutnormalpupils,andmyonlymeansofversingwiththemwasreadingtheirlips.MystudiesforthefirstyearwereEnglishhistory,Englishliterature,German,Latin,arithmetic,Latinpositionandoccasionalthemes.UntilthenIhadakenacourseofstudywiththeideaofpreparingforcollege;butIhadbeenwelldrilledinEnglishbyMissSullivan,anditsoonbecameevidenttomyteachersthatIneedednospecialinstruinthissubjectbeyondacriticalstudyofthebooksprescribedbythecollege.Ihadhad,moreoodstartinFrendreceivedsixmonthsinstruinLatin;butGermanwasthesubjectwithwhichIwasmostfamiliar.
